What’s the best kind of mandolin to learn on?

wvonelovechick asked:

For sometime I’ve wanted to teach myself to play a string instrument. Recently I decided on the mandolin. I can play flute, French horn, alto saxophone, and piano so I have a solid understanding of musical theory. The mandolin I buy doesn’t have to be anything fancy just something with a good sound.

The best kind to learn on is an inexpensive, used unit.
Do your due diligence. The site below is for ideas on style and finish. The most inexpensive (beginner) new was $ 130. at this site. Too much by my book. But maybe you have some coins.

Here’s one for $ 50. Thats more like it.
I’d attempt to purchase a used instrument. Look in the ‘Green Sheet’ type sources and the bulletin board at the local music store. [ It may be back by the restrooms. The store is not really interested in selling someones item at a lower price.] Hang around a music festival for a bargain; not a resale of new unit. Buy a USED unit. The idea is to be able to hear the tone and tune of the instrument. You’re a musician so you’ll be able to hear the difference. Get a case no matter what you buy. Even a soft ‘gig’ bag is better than nothing. [ I hate it when i anwer these questions I end up on the sites looking for stuff.. 8^)]

You want to buy something of decent quality, so that you will not have to upgrade any time soon, or…if you discontinue playing you can at least get a decent price for it used.
