I don’t know. I think it’s just an old ancient chinese instrument. Trust the chinese to be weird!
I didn’t see the closing ceremonies, but based on your description I’m going to guess that it was probably an “erhu” - a traditional Chinese instrument played with a bow.
I don’t know what they were but those ladies playing them were HOT.
